Genesis 35 - Returning To The Promises of God

Jacob returns to Bethel after the horrible events of chapter 34. He finds that God is faithful to His word and the promises are reaffirmed. However, we also see that though Jacob is back in God's will, the effects of the curse are still active and the seed of the woman who will deliver has not yet come.

Genesis 33 - Jacob / Israel - Simul Justus Et Peccator

Jacob has been changed by God and God answers Jacob's prayer to be protected from Esau. Jacob demonstrates a true repentance for what he has done to Esau. But Jacob also still shows us that his sinful nature is not yet abolished. Jacob lies to Esau and settles in Shechem rather than returning to his father - which will cause Jacob's family incredible grief in the next chapter.

Genesis 32:1-20 God Prepares The Heart To Meet Him

God has been working on Jacob. He is not the same man that he was when he left home twenty years ago. He demonstrates humility, love for others, and even repentance as God prepares him for a confrontation. God is backing Jacob against the wall so he will have nothing but God to trust in, and this will culminate in God coming to Jacob himself - and changing him.

Genesis 31 (part 2) God Will Glorify His Name

God doesn't allow Jacob to just slink away from Laban secretly. God desires His name to be glorified and feared by Laban and He is pushing Jacob toward a confrontation with Himself.

Genesis 31 - God's Faithfulness in Jacob's Escape

God continues to protect Jacob and commands him to leave Laban's household. There is some question as to whether Jacob demonstrated faith or not in his departure. However God is consistently moving Jacob toward Himself as He pushes Jacob to trust Him. The escape of Jacob will inevitably lead to God Himself meeting Jacob on the way home

Genesis 29:31-30:24 Baby Wars! (Overcoming Idolatry)

Leah and Rachel (along with a few handmaidens) produce sons for Jacob. They fight for Jacob's love and the status of being the better child bearer. Both elevate family status and victory in their baby race to the status of an idol - but God continues to fulfill His promise in the midst of their sin.

Genesis 29:1-30 When Providence Disciplines

Jacob is disciplined by God's providence when he is forced to take some of his own medicine. Just like he deceived Esau to gain the blessing, he is now deceived by Laban. He is shown the consequences of sin and his new family faced with many of the same problems that plagued his old family. God doesn't let his people continue in sin without sanctification.

Genesis 28:10-22 The Grace of Jacob's Ladder

Jacob is running for his life. He is in a very desolate place and the promises of God don't look like they are possible now. Even though Jacob's heart does not yet belong to God, God is faithful to His promise and reaffirms His promise to Jacob. Jesus interprets the vision of Jacob's ladder for us in the New Testament.

Genesis 27-28:9 The Consequences of Sin

Esau, Jacob, Rebecca and Isaac all face the consequences of their sins. Each has to deal with what they have done. Esau responds by trying to work his way back into his father's graces, while Isaac repents and reverses his position, coming in line with God's will that Jacob is the promised seed.

Genesis 27 - Hijacking the Blessing - Part 1

The "seed" promise is faced with more obstacles. Isaac is now old and has decided to subvert God's will, while Rebecca and Jacob have decided to sin in order that good may come from it. Esau finally learns what he has forsaken when the blessing is denied him - and God's word and promise once again is fulfilled despite opposition and the sinfulness of His people

Genesis 26:1-22 God's Faithfulness Through Opposition

The promise of Abraham has passed to Isaac. God reiterates the promise to Isaac by stating that He will be with Isaac. God protects His promise to Isaac through Isaac's own sin, and the persecution of the Philistines. Isaac is pushed further and further away from Gerar, but even in a famine, Isaac is blessed and prospers.

Genesis 25:19-34 Despising the Promise and Trading The Birthright

Esau sells his birthright for a bowl of stew. This wasn't just his inheritance of servants, money, and livestock - the inheritance from Abraham and Isaac came with a promise from God. The "seed" would come from the line of Abraham and Isaac. God already told Rebecca that Jacob would be the promised seed, but here we see Esau couldn't care less about his spiritual inheritance. He was a profane man (Heb. 12:17).

Genesis 25:1-18 - God Keeps His Promises (The Death of Abraham)

At the close of Abraham's life, Genesis records the fulfillment of many promises God made. Abraham is given a long full life, his many children become "many nations," Isaac receives God's blessing, and Ishmael bears 12 princes. All these things were promised to Abraham by God. God keeps every promise, even those we think are small.

Genesis 24 - Trusting the Providence of God

Abraham realizes he will die before seeing the promises fulfilled. He acts strategically to provide a wife for his son. God providentially provides for Isaac in amazingly ordinary ways. Abraham trusts that God will provide, but he also acts responsibly, placing himself in the path of God's providence.

Genesis 23 - The Death of Sarah

Sarah, Abraham's wife, dies before the promise of the land is fulfilled. Abraham must understand that the promises of God extend beyond death, and they do not come without suffering. Abraham trust that the land promise will be fulfilled and buys a family burial ground, signifying that Canaan is now his ancestral homeland.
