Psalm 127 - Unless The Lord Build...

There is quite a lot going on this Sunday. Of course it is Mother’s day; the day we celebrate God’s gift of our mothers. We are also having eight families which will participate in our Parent / child dedication service in the 11am service. And in addition to all that, we will begin our baby bottle project this Sunday to raise money in support of Kansans for Life & Embrace Crisis Pregnancy Center, in order to continue the fight against abortion and to help mothers who may think abortion is their only option. So because of this focus on the family, we will pause our study of Galatians and briefly look at Psalm 127. This is a psalm of ascent, meaning it was sung by those going up to the temple during times of worship. The Psalm is only 5 but it is significant in its application for parents and the family. The first two verses show us that unless the Lord is working, all our labors are in vain, and in the second part, the psalmist applies this principle to the raising of children and the family. Sunday as we celebrate our mothers, and the families committing to raise their children in the Lord, I hope that God’s word will guide us to commit ourselves to preparing the next generation to stand for the gospel in a culture that is continually moving away from the truth of God. This is important even if you don’t have children or your children are grown and have their own families. We will see 8 families committing to raise their children in the Lord and in the fellowship of FBC. Regardless of what season our own family is in, we can invest in making disciples of the next generation.

Psalm 111 - I Will Thank The Lord With My Whole Heart

Before we return to our study through the book of Acts, it is fitting that we step back and stand in awe of our God and the works that He is doing among us. If we reflect on God’s presence and works among us over the last two years, I don’t think we can help but be amazed at His mercy and goodness towards us at First Baptist Church. I remember standing in front of a camera in our worship center during the month of March two years ago, unsure of what was about to happen. The world was shutting down because of Covid and for a time, we had to move to online services only. I remember the stress and worry of it all. But through that time God just affirmed over and over again that He is working through it all. I remember saying to the camera, FBC is not just going to survive this, we are going to thrive through it...and by God’s grace we did! Even more than any of us could have imagined.

And last Sunday as we kicked off our pledge campaign, God made His will for us known so decisively that it amazed us all! God is so good! And more than everything else, God has sent His Son to pay for our sin and draw us to Himself. He has forgiven our sin! He has given us the ministry of reconciliation as we proclaim the good news to others! God deserves our praise and worship! He deserves to be worshiped with our whole heart! He is God alone and He has poured His grace out upon us in Jesus Christ. And even in our sufferings, He allows us to cast our cares upon Him because He cares for us!

So before we move back to Acts, this Sunday we will examine Psalm 111, and use this song of ancient Israel to declare our praise and thanksgiving to the Holy One who is so good to us! I hope you will read this psalm with an eye toward all that God has done - and is doing - in your life, and make it the prayer of your hearts.

Psalm 111:1 - Praise the LORD!
I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart,
in the company of the upright, in the congregation.

Psalm 78:1-8 For The Next Generation

Psalm 78:1-8 centers on the responsibility of the family and the covenant community to make known the greatness of God to the next generation. Our goal is “so that they should set their hope in God” (Ps. 78:7) and the Psalmist shows us how we strive toward that goal. Today, as our world strays further and further from biblical values, morals, and objective truth, planting the Word of God in the next generation has never been more important.

Psalm 103 - Cultivating a Heart of Thanksgiving

David praises and blesses God's name for His wonderful works. He preaches to himself, telling his own soul and everything within him to bless God. The first and most important reason God is owed praise is for forgiving our sin. We can never take our salvation to granted.

Psalm 24 - Who Is This King of Glory?

The Psalmist speaks of God's authority and the requirement God has set upon fallen man. Man must have clean hands and a pure heart to be accepted before God. Only the King of Glory, God and man fulfilled that role.

Psalm 97 - The Terrifying Justice of God

It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of a living God. The true God reigns over all and His presence is utterly terrifying throughout Scripture. Only the righteous can rejoice in His presence and only those in Jesus Christ are declared righteous.

Psalm 22 - A View From The Cross

David writes of his feelings of suffering and abandonment by God, but he speaks prophetically of the crucifixion of the Son of God and the atonement for Sin, giving us a glimpse into the mind of Christ as he suffers for sin.

Psalm 103 - The Sin of "Forgetfulness"

David charges us to "forget not His benefits." This is essential for believers maintaining their zeal and fire for the Lord Jesus Christ. Forgetfulness of God's work in us is a rust that eats away at our spiritual lives.
